A Nursing Scholarship fund is named after Lena Pearl Wheeler, widow of Glenn Curtiss, who gave the land for a Clubhouse to the GFWC Miami Springs Woman’s Club. She donated the land in honor of her mother, Jennie Neff, and her husband’s mother, Lua Curtiss. After the death of Glen Curtiss, she married H. Sayre Wheeler and is best remembered today as Lena Pearl Wheeler.
A Fine Arts Scholarship is also awarded to local high school students when funds are available.
By supporting the GFWC HOBY Project, a donation is given for a Miami Springs High School sophomore to attend the annual leadership seminar in Orlando, FL.
MSWC was the first library in Miami Springs. When the Miami Springs Public Library was established and moved to its permanent location, an ongoing in-house Memorial Library was begun as a tribute to the memory of a deceased member.
The BackPack weekend meal program provides meals to children in our community who have been identified by their counselors as being in need. 35 children are served weekly at our local elementary, middle, and senior high schools. These weekend meal bags include two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, two snacks, and a note card of encouragement. Each Thursday of the school year club volunteers drop off large bags of meals at each school. They get placed into small backpacks provided to the students at the beginning of the year to maintain the privacy of its contents. This happens for 31 weeks of the school year. The club holds several packing events throughout the year. Each bag costs about $5.75 a week, which totals approximately $175 for the school year. For more information on supporting the backpack program please contact Elizabeth Fisher email@example.com or Lynda Randolph firstname.lastname@example.org
